Michelle began partnering with physicians in 2019 as a collaborative approach to chronic illness. This provided patients the benefit of having numerous perspectives weighing in on the presenting concerns and treatment.
For example, it is quite common for an auto-immune disease to be inflamed by stress. When a patient is able to have their doctor, who is addressing the physical roots and symptoms, communicate with their therapist, who is addressing the stored stress in their body, the patient enjoys the benefits of a more robust treatment experience.
In my office we will focus on how past and present stress, including the impact of the illness, overstimulates the nervous system and the body. We will utilize a Somatic EMDR integration with a blend of other treatment modalities to clean out the stored stress that is impacting the physical symptoms.
Since 2019, Michelle has partnered with Functional Medicine Providers, Gynecologists & Hormone Specialists, Acupuncturists & Chiropractors, Pelvic Floor Therapists, and Psychiatrists. She is open to collaborating care with any alternative or western medicine provider a patient is working with. Learn more about My Approach to therapy.
Can therapy help with chronic illness
Yes. Therapy can help the nervous system regulate and clear up any physical manifestations of the psychological stress. This allows a distinction to be made between the symptoms that are rooted psychologically and the symptoms that stem from the physical illness. This reallocates the immune system's resources to focus specifically on the physical illness.
Is chronic illness therapy different from regular therapy
Yes and no. No, in that therapy is a safe space to process anything. Yes, in that there are unique nuances to living with chronic illness that we will target. Read further about Individual Psychotherapy.
Do I need a diagnosis
No. Part of the challenge with some chronic illness is acquiring the correct diagnosis and medical team. This can be a very stressful time. Therapy can provide you support for wherever you are in the process.
